IALT: solve an equation using the method, "Rounding and Compensating."

Talofa lava and greetings to you all, today I am going to be blogging about Maths!! For Maths today we did something different to what we usually do, during the middle block the instead of having the class be split into two, for today we had our Maths session as a CLASS. For Maths the class was split into 5 groups of 3, 4 or 5, in my group was Grace, Helena, Lopiseni, and Raymond.
Each group was given the same problem and here is part of the problem that I remember:
"Ms. Aireen has 114 texts left on her phone, and there are six days left of the month, she needs to send an equal number of texts, how many texts can she send each day?"
That is all I can remember from today's Maths problem, so first of all within our group we shared our strategy and we all agreed that "Rounding and Compensating" was the Method that we were going to use to solve the problem. Here is our strategy:

Key ideas:
- 114 texts
-  6 days left of the month
- Question - How many equal number of texts can she/Ms. Aireen send each day?

114 ÷ 6= 19
(120 ÷ 6) - (6 ÷ 6)
= 20 - 1
= 19

Process:
We are trying to round 114 to the nearst ten which is 110 BUT you can't equally divide 110 into 6 so we round up to the nearst ten which is 120, 120 can be divided into so therefore we did 120 ÷ 6 which equals 20 because 6 x 2 = 12 and because 120 is a hundreds you then add zero(0) which makes 120. With the next step we divided 6 by 6 because if you look back at the previous step we had to add 6 to GET to 120 remember, so we started off with 114 but then had to round up to the nearst ten which required us to add 6 to get our answer, 6 ÷ 6= 1. We then took away 1 from 20 which gives us the answer 19, we took away 1 from 20 because from the previous step we had to ADD to get our answer so doing the same we took AWAY. To double check our answer to see if it is correct I then had to multiply BECAUSE with our problem we used division.
So... 19 x 6= 114 why because 10 x 6= 60 and 9 x 6= 54, so we then add the two numbers 60 and 54 which gives us the answer 114!

I really liked today's Maths session, it was both challenging and easy and the same time, it was challenging explaining to others our strategy but was easy solving the problem. Our/my group did really well with communicating with each other and sharing our ideas within the group. We ALL to part and also had a part when presenting as well.

IALT: Create a clock

Hello everyone and welcome back to my blog!
For today I am going to be blogging about our Technology session we had for this week/today. As you all know for Technology the Kia Manawanui Syndicate is divided in three groups, Hard Material, Cooking, and Graphics. Right now I am in Graphics along with 15 other students, our Graphics teacher is Ms. Ferguson, last week for Graphic's we were all given a sugar paper, A3 paper, brush, cup (filled with water), plastic plate, and paint. Last week we were painting, Ms. Ferguson taught us how to shade different colours and how to create new colours such as Purple, Orange, Brown or Pink by mixing Primary colours using paint, which was a fun task.

This week for Technology we continued sketching/drawing our designs for our clock that we will be making. Our clock designs could or can be what you or the person your making it for likes, it can be about yours/someone's favourite game, sport, subject, food etc. My clock that I will be making is for me and my sisters, my four designs that I drew reflects what me and both my sisters like for example, here are my four clock design ideas:
- A laughing emoji clock
- Fruit clock
- Music clock
- Art clock

I have already started on my designs and I really hope that my clock that I will create will come out the way I want it to. What's challenging is that I have to choose ONE of my designs that I will be making, which is going to be a hard decision. Right now I am thinking of choosing my laughing emoji design, two reasons:
One because it's simply and two because it dosen't require much work, which makes it easier for me and will help me finish my clock on time. If you know me well you will know that I like to keep things simply but interesting at the same time which is confusing (a bit).
I am really excited and is looking forward to how my clock turns out.

πŸ˜πŸ‘‹Farwell Fa'afiuπŸ‘‹πŸ˜

πŸ˜πŸ‘‹Farwell Fa'afiuπŸ‘‹πŸ˜

Today's blog is ALL about a student from the Kia Manawanui Syndicate who has moved to Australia, Fa'afiu. Fa'afiu is a Year 8 student who just left on yesterday although we said our goodbyes on Monday. Although I wasn't one of her best friends she still is one of mine. I would like to share some of her qualities, first of all Fa'afiu was a talented and confident person, I remember her performing in front of the WHOLE SCHOOL twice during her FIRST year!! I admire her because she has so much confidence and is a talented cultural dancer. Another qualitiy is that she is a comedian, she is a very funny person you just loves making people smile, she was ALWAYS cheering me up and keeping me company, I especially love her jokes. Fa'afiu is an intelligent person who loves learning, from last year I can tell/see that she has improved in ALL subjects she is taking part in class activities more (although she already was) and is just always in a happy mood. Another thing is that she is a really really REALLY good Volleyball player in fact she is a GREAT Volleyball player AND a GREAT drummer as well, it is depressing having her leave so early. I really wished she could've stayed much much longer. I do hope she does come back to visit but all we can do now is wish her ALL the best through her new journey in Australia. Farewell Fa'afiu, wish you ALL THE BEST in Australia. God bless you and your family.

🏝🌺 Polynesian Explorers - Lesson 2🌺 🏝

🏝🌺 Polynesian Explorers - Lesson 2🌺 🏝
IALA: The early encounters with the European explorers.

Hello and greetings to you all, welcome back to my blog!
Today for Literacy room 9 were reading different texts about the Polynesian explorers, with my group we were reading these three texts:
- Maori Life Before The Europeans
- An Immigrant Family
- The legend of Hinemoa

All three texts related to our topic which is 'Polynesian Explorers.' Also along with reading these texts we had to answer questions relating to the topic provided on another slide, each group has at least 8 or 9 questions.
Here are the three links to the three different texts:

Although I haven't read ALL three texts I still have learnt some new and interesting facts about the Polynesians and Europeans explorers for example:
I learnt that the first European explorer to settle in New Zealand (Or at that time New Zealand was called Novo Zeelandia) was a Dutchman named Abel Tasman.
As it says in the previous fact that I learnt that back then in the 1630's or 1640's that 'New Zealand' was called 'Novo Zeelandia.'
I've also learnt that Golden bay back then was once called Murderers Bay reason being when a group of Abel Tasman's men tried to land in the South Island, they were killed by local Maori and so he quickly left naming what we know call Golden bay, Murderers Bay.
I've also read that the first complete map of New Zealand created by Captain James Cook was finished in the 1770's.

(Captain James Cook's first completed map of New Zealand)

What comes to your mind when you think about Polynesian Explorers?
Thank you for reading/visitng my blog!

IALT: Find different methods to solve a equation.

Malo e lelei and welcome back to my blog, today I am going to be blogging about our Maths session room 9 had with Mr.J. Yesterday for Maths us room 9 girls (Me, Lydia, Hope, Alyssa) and Stanley each grabbed a whiteboard marker and had to find the different methods that can be used to solve an equation for example there are at least 5 or 6 methods which are:
- Rainbow method
- Algorithm Method
- Lattice Method
- Lines Method(sorry do not know the originally name for this method)
- Rounding and compensating

Here are the examples for each method:

Rainbow method:

Algorithm method:

Lattice Method:

Rounding and compensating:

These are the different types of methods that can be used to solve any equation, for me I think that the best method for me is the 'Lattice method' and also 'Rounding and compensating' these two methods are easy for me to work with I understand them both and they both make Maths easier for me.

Cybersmart - Quality Blog Commenting

Cybersmart - Quality Blog Commenting
IAL: How to write a quality blog comment which is Positive, Thoughtful, and Helpful.

Today for Cybersmart we had Ms. Collins come into our class (room 9) to share with us about writing a quality blog comment on our buddies class all around New Zealand. First we had to visit our buddies class blogs, during this first step I chose a blog which caught my attention from Toroa Hub, Marshland School I chose their 'They . Are . Us' blog which is about them showing their love and support to/for those who have passed onto another life and to those who have lost loved ones. I really liked the idea of how they showed their love and support towards the muslims.
Here is my quality blog comment based on their blog 'They . Are . Us'

For our other class buddie which is from Greymouth is a school called Awahono School. From their class blog I decided to comment on their Athol Thomas Hart timeline, appearntly from what I know Athol Thomas Hart is a soldier who fought in a war located in Egypt, sadly he did not make it and was killed in action in 1918. I really liked how this person used their creativity while presenting this timeline.
Here is my quality blog comment based on their blog 'Soldier Timeline'

Doing this task I learnt how to write a quality blog comment on others blogs and got to know what our buddie classes are like, I liked especially Marshland School's blog, I liked how they really showed their love and support through a video by placing flowers as the shape of a heart and in the middle is written 'Aroha' which means love.
Here are the links to each of these classes blog's
Please do take the time to visit both class blogs, thank you!

🌀🏏Cricket Tournament🏏🌀

🌀🏏Cricket Tournament🏏🌀

Bula vinaka and welcome back to my blog! As you all know that every year for every term we have at least 2 or 3 sports that will be happening during the term for example, this term we have JUST finished our softball tournament 2 or 3 weeks ago (not too sure). So softball is usually our FIRST EVER sport that happens every year in the first term and next we have cricket! YASS! We were informed that the teams will be separate meaning their will be a GIRLS cricket team and a BOYS team. I was suprised and made me want to join (even though I was already going to). Almost ALL year 7 and 8 girls joined the cricket team, at least 12 girls joined the cricket team which was a suprise considering that not much girls would join sports like these.

I think that having the teams separate as a GIRLS and BOYS team was a good decision (well at least I think so). Reason being is because usually whenever the teams are mixed us girls would hardly communicate with each other AND the boys too. But with the groups being JUST girls I think it was easier for us girls to communicate and work TOGETHER as a team and IT WAS! Our Year 7 and 8 girls team won 3 games out of our 5 games that we played. There were many talented sport players at the tournament especially the girls and with our great coach (Mr. Reddy) teaching us the proper way to bowl or pitch the ball AND showing us how to swing our bat's in different positions or how to hit the ball OVER the cones to get 6 RUNS!! Although we did not practice much (especially the girls) we still gave our best and did well and the same goes with ALL teams that represented our school at the tournament we ALL did an AMAZING JOB and the teachers aswell.

IALA: Voyages of early polynesians.

Talofa lava and welcome back to my blog! Today we have been discussing as a class what Polynesian explorers are. I discussed with my classmate Grace Uasi about the topic (what are polynesian explorers) and we thought that polynesian explorers where people who come from the islands and sail to New Zealand or different countries and share their talents or skills with others and start a new beginning. Here is a K.W.L chart created by me, Lydia, and Hope using a google drawing, take a look:

Follow up questions:
What did the polynesians use to help navigate?
In what year did a voyaging canoe (Hokulea) complete a worldwide voyage?
In what year did the voyage society FIRST launch the Hokulea?
True or False - Polynesia is the BIGGEST NATION on Earth
True or False - It took 330 days for the polynesians to sail from polynesia to South America

IALT: reflect on an event that has affected our country - NZ

As you all know last week Friday there has been an attack located at a mosque at Christchurch. This attack which was caused by 3 men and a women had an effect which had killed 50 people and at least 31 are injured in hospitial STILL recovering from the incident. In class we discussed what had happened and how we ALL are showing our love and respects to those who have lost their lives and to those who has lost loved ones. In areas of differnt countries are all showing their support and love in MANY different ways, people from different cultures gather together at different mosques, Islamic centres, and in public areas.

Reading - Kuri

Reading - Kuri
IALT: Identify and summarise the key ideas in the text.
Related imageFor the past 2 or 3 weeks, for reading the Kia Manawanui syndicate were put into reading groups and for each group there was a text shared with us, there is a text about Kuri, about life in Afghanistan and many more.

This text is ALL about how Kuri came to Aotearoa, the life of Kuri and there owners, what Kuri was like, and about WHY they disapeared. Kuri's were small dogs with long hair, pointed ears, and strong jaws. Back then at the time where polynesians arrived here in Aotearoa they would shave the Kuri's skin and use it as clothing to help keep themselves warm. Kuri's were GREAT animals and was helpful, Kuri's were very good a hunting and some were even pets.

This week for reading I have been reading the text 'Kuri' by Priscilla Wehi.
A key idea in this text is extinction, an example of extinction in this text is how Kuri's bones were found areas in Hawaii, the Cook Islands, and Aotearoa New Zealand. It also says in the text that Kuri's would also be eaten by their owners if they were starving. Another key idea is the disapearnce of the Kuri's. An example of the disapearnce of the Kuri's is in the text it says that they think that even before the pakeha arrived in Aotearoa New Zealand they think that the Kuri's could've been dying out. As time went by after the europeans arrived in Aotearoa - New Zealand Kuri's had puppies and many of them were wild, as it says in the text farmers didn't like dogs running or attacking their sheeps so the Kuri's were often killed.

Question of the blog - Why do you think the Kuri's started to disapear?

✈️πŸ‡³πŸ‡ΏInquiry - Exploring AotearoaπŸ‡³πŸ‡Ώ✈️
WALT: Explore the past

This whole week we've been learning about the history of New Zealand, for the past few days we've been put into groups of 3 or 4 and within our groups we were given a station to work at, at every station there is a text/legend about or relating to the history of New Zealand. There was 8 stations and here are a list of the different texts/legends:
  • Station 1 - The Arrival of Maori & Legend of Kupe
  • Station 2 - The Voyage of the Arawa
  • Station 3 - Maori life before the Europeans
  • Station 4 - The legends of Hinemoa
  • Station 5 - Captain James Cook
  • Station 6 - The first Europeans
  • Station 7 - Hongi Hika
  • Station 8 - ?
  • Station 9 - ?
At every station we have at least 15 minutes to read the text and discuss with our group what the text or legend is about, we also were shared a presentation which had the questions about the text/legend, we had to copy that slide and create a new presentation and paste the slide there on our own presentation. These questions related to the topic and gave us some ideas about what to discuss between our groups. Here is me and my group's presentation(we haven't completed our presentation just yet):

Talofa lava and greetings to you all, as you all know for everyday there is a word relating to our Inquiry topic or having to relate to what we are learning, today's word was Century. Throughout my research I found out that the meaning of Century means:

- "A period of one hundred years."

And here is an example:

IALT: Use SOLO framework to think and respond to ideas in our novel.

Image result for the graveyard book

This week starting from this week Wednesday room 9 left to the library to choose our one or two novels/books for our task, before choosing our books Ms. Micic read a book to us about how New Zealand came to be, how people from different countries came to New Zealand and brought with them their talent to share with others. After having Ms. Micic read a book to us we then were givent the chance to choose our one or two books, I WAS going to choose one book but I really wanted to improve in my reading so I grabbed/chose two books my first book is called 'The Graveyard Book' and my second book is called 'Trapped'. I chose these two books because from reading the back cover of the book, BOTH books seemed interesting and I think that these two books are some sort of a mystery book (Which I love).
It was such a hard choice because there were SO MANY INTERESTING BOOKS!! I found one of my favourites (A series of unfortunate events) which is also a movie BUT decided not to take the book BECAUSE i've already read and watched the book/movie so many times (Which is ANOTHER mystery book).

After choosing our books we then made our way back to the class and settled down, our reliever Mrs. Hauschild (pronounced as House-Child) then had us hop onto the SOLO Novel presentation that was shared with us. Within the presentation we had to answer the questions provided and had to complete all tasks, although we didn't have much time to complete ALL tasks. Here is the presentation:

(On the 3rd slide)
1. Write your predictions about what you think the book will be about this week before you read it.
My prediction:
I think this book is about an normal living orphan boy being brought up in a graveyard by ghosts. I think that this boy is probably in danger and is hoping to find the person who is responsible for killing his family, I hope that this boy will know the truth about who he really is and maybe his family ISN’T dead, maybe his family is trapped or was threatened to leave him behind or else…

I’m really confused with why a boy is being brought up in a graveyard by ghosts, I know this is just a book but are ghosts real? And can ghosts really raise a child?

2. Write your personal reading goal for this week. How many chapters would you like to read? How many tasks will you complete?
My personal reading goal/s:
For this week because this book only has 8 chapters I am willing or hoping to read AT LEAST 4 or 5 chapters. This book is really interesting and so I am hoping to finish the WHOLE ENTIRE book, to make sure I finish the book I will take the book home and will read for at least 1 or 2 hours. I really want to improve in my reading this year because reading is the subject that I lack most and so I will be finishing all tasks, if not then I will set my reading tasks aside for homework and hopefully I will finish my work at home.

WALA: Multiples and factors.

Last week for Maths we were learning about multiples and factors, for Maths we were put into our Maths groups and had to discuss what WE think multiples and factors mean. Within my group we discussed and gave our thoughts about the topic (multiples and factors), I thought that factors were similar to multiplication, where two numbers equal to a
number-(4x4=16). I thought that multiples were similar to addition AND multiplication, but as we learnt more about multiples and factors I got to understand what they both were, here is an example or a factor:

Factor of 12: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 12.
Factor of 32: 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32.
Factor of 24: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12.

For the past few weeks, for Maths room 9 has been given a presentation that has different equations/problems for each week/day. We could either work the equations/problems in our groups, with a partner, or individual. Here is the Maths presentation:

IALT: Know the difference and the similarities between two different types of clocks.

Kia ora and greetings to you all, this week for technology(Graphics) we were given or was shared a google drawing which had five boxes, 2 on the sides, one in the middle, and 2 small boxes in between the three, which looks like this:

After receiving the google drawing we had to complete the task which was given to us, the google drawing. I chose two different types of clock, an analog clock, and a digital clock.

             (Analog clock)                                                                                  (Digital clock)

Within the three boxes where it says 'differences and similarities' I wrote down at least 4 or 5 things explaining what the two clocks have in common and what they don't have in common. Here is my google drawing:
(Click Here to view the google drawing clearly)

After completing this task I then moved onto my clock designs, for my clock designs I am making three themed clocks, these three themed clocks represents what me and my sisters love an example I drew a playing card clock, a pizza clock, and last but not least a clock decorated with musical symbols and roman numerals as the numbers on my clock. I don't have a photo but I will present my designs to you all when it is completed/finished.

⚰️πŸ‡ͺπŸ‡¬Explanation Writing - How were/are mummies made? (In Ancient Egypt)πŸ‡ͺπŸ‡¬⚰️
IALT: Write an explanation writing about how mummies were/are made? (In Ancient Egypt)
(Topic - How were mummies made?)

In ancient Egypt whenever egyptians would die, they would go through these steps to preserve or protect the body.

  • The first step to making a mummy is having to insert a hook through a hole near the nose and pull out part of the brain.
  • Cut the left side of the body to remove ALL internal organs EXCEPT the heart which the egyptians believe help guide the mummy or body in or through the afterlife.
  • The next step is easy, all you need to do is let the internal organs dry.
  • The next step to making a mummy is having to place the internal organs in separate canopic jars, a canopic jar is mostly or only used by egyptians during the process of the mummification, carved from limestone and were made of pottery. Each organs are placed in specific canopic jars, in each canopic jar was an organ which was protected by the four sons of Horus, each son was responsible for protecting each of the organs.
  • After placing the internal organs (lungs, intestines, stomach and liver) in separate canopic jar the egyptians would fill the jars with a type of salt called natron, this salt helped kill the bacteria but this salt is not like the others, this salt is mixed with two alkaline salts, soda ash and baking soda.
  • The egyptians then rinse the body with wine and spices to clean the skin.
  • The body would then be laid or set in a bed being filled with natron for about 35 days to protect its outer flesh.
  • When time has come or after 35 days the alkaline salt had sucked the fluid from the body and formed hard brown clumps.
  • The priests poured tree resin over the body to seal it, they messaged the body with a waxy mixture that included cedar oil.
  • The priests would then wrap the dead body with linen or bandages.
  • Lastly they would then place the covered body in a nested coffin or sometimes in a stone sarcophagus.

This is the process of how mummies were/are made in ancient Egypt.
